Patty Griffin

We had Patty in the City Winery Nashville venue for the first time on behalf of an edited showcase during AmericanFest in 2015. It was really exciting to have her return for a couple full shows a year later. Both of her shows in November of 2016 were sold out, what a crowd! For her first show, she was joined on stage by Buddy Miller, and for her second, she did a song with Emmylou Harris. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.30.27 PM

Emmylou Harris Residency benefiting Bonaparte’s Retreat

In May, we had four shows with Emmylou Harris and a rotating list of some of the best musicians in Nashville including Sam Bush, Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller, ending the four-play with her longtime duet partner, Rodney Crowell. In addition to a night of legendary songwriting, we were able to donate $80,000 for Emmylou’s charity.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.30.33 PM

Maynard James Keenan

In November, we hosted the amazingly popular and eccentric Tool frontman, Maynard James Keenan. This was the first of a run of shows that he has never done before – Q&A in support of his new biography. No questions that were being asked were discussed prior to the show with Maynard, making the evening completely spontaneous. The show sold out in minutes, and the audience clung to his every word. No music was played at all, simply two hours of Maynard speaking in-depth about his book.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.30.41 PM

Graham Nash

In April, we had two nights of Graham Nash. This was an absolutely surreal evening. Graham was very comfortable, open and full of stories. It was great to hear him discuss the songwriting process and memories of each song. To top it all off, he came out on stage and played the entire show barefoot.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.30.47 PM

Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell Birthday

We were honored to host The Campbell family for Glen’s 80th birthday celebration in early May. The show was a retrospective, intimate, personal story-telling of the long-time and productive musical collaboration between Webb and Campbell. Jimmy sat at the piano all night playing his best known creations recorded by Campbell while images of the two of them displayed across a screen for the audience to enjoy. He told many stories about his relationship with Campbell, some humorous and some touching.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.30.54 PM

The Zombies

This was City Winery Nashville’s first time presenting The Zombies, and they did not disappoint. They played their show, all the old hits and new songs alike, with the same excitement and preciseness they’ve done for the 30 years of their career. Solid, impressive show.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.31.00 PM

Peter Wolf

For years, we had been trying to get Peter Wolf to play City Winery Nashville. After we opened the City Winery Atlanta location, we finally had the opportunity to host him. Thank goodness for Atlanta, or we may still be waiting to bring Peter down south! His show did not disappoint.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.31.06 PM

Ani DiFranco

We had a two-night run with Ani at the end of June. Not only were Ani and her staff personable and easy to work with, but her shows were amazing. Simple, intimate, and different than any show she’s ever done in Nashville previous to her last City Winery tour.

Screen Shot 2016-12-21 at 12.31.12 PM

Ambrosia

We frequently host shows similar in style to Ambrosia…Atlanta Rhythm Section, Firefall, Pure Prairie League. We’ve always thought of Ambrosia as a top tier band from this era. Although we initially had difficulty finding a fitting date, City Winery Atlanta helped the Nashville location bring them down in December. There was an abundance of excitement having them in town. The crowd really enjoyed their music, especially the harmonies!

Steve Earle January Residency: Solo & Acoustic

We’re very excited to have the legendary Steve Earle playing a January residency here at City Winery Nashville all month long! Joined by Langhorne Slim, Colter Wall, Buddy Miller and Emily Earle, each show will be solo, acoustic and absolutely unforgettable. Meet & Greets are available for each show, too! Click here to purchase tickets!

Almost twenty years ago, Steve Earle and I took a ride through South Nashville. It was down those mean streets that Steve had spent his famous “hiatus” in the early 1990’s mostly shooting dope. It was a crazy, unprecedented thing. Here was a guy – the supposed “new face” of outlaw country – who had already put out a near unbroken string of instant classics, including chart hits like “Guitar Town,” “Someday,” and the immortal “Copperhead Road.” And he just up and disappears, drops from sight for four years, making no records, playing no shows. Many thought he was dead.

By the time we met, Steve was on the way back, through his sixty-day stint in the Davidson County Jail, firmly in recovery. He’d already released a couple new discs, the masterly acoustic Train A Comin’ and the defiantly electric I Feel Alright. But you could tell, he wasn’t all the way back. Clean and sober can be a transitory thing, the ghosts of the old days are far from fully vanquished, if they ever will be. Steve wasn’t sure he wanted any more of South Nashville, but being Steve, which is to be an adventurer and a sport, he agreed to take the tour.

In matters of the heart, Steve Earle has always been an optimist. There are several better-known tunes on the “Guitar Town” album, but when it comes to young(er) love all you really need is “Fearless Heart.” With Whitmanesque exaltation of his own resiliency, the singer sings: “I got me a fearless heart/ strong enough to get you through the scary part/ its been broken many times before/ a fearless heart just comes back for more.” Whatever happens, he’ll bounce back; all previous failures are only recon so as to guide His Own True Love Of the Moment across the “scary part.” Back then, Steve had faith in his ability to fall in love again, no matter what. It was a strange dichotomy. With an unmatched talent to describe the heartbreaking (as with the doomed Billy Austin, “twenty-nine years old, quarter Cherokee I’m told”) the singer largely avoided his own heartbreak.

“I’m patient, but I’m focused. There’s a lot to do. I’d like to write a musical, I’m working on a country record. I think a lot people this age feel like this. And if there’s one thing I know about songwriting, it doesn’t matter if it’s a love song, a song for my kid, or about an issue, something I saw on TV – people don’t give a fuck what I think about it, what they do give a fuck about is what experiences we have in common. As a songwriter, that’s where I want to go, to touch that place between me and you.”

Then, simply because Steve has too much hellraiser in him to leave it like that, he invoked the name of Willie Dixon, writer of some of the greatest modern blues songs, tunes like “Back Door Man,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Spoonful,” “You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover,” which were recorded by people like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Bo Diddley. Asked why he wrote and played the blues, Dixon, three hundred pounds and crusty sharp, reputedly said, “money and women, what else is there?”

This week’s City Winery Nashville’s All Star is Business Manager Lauren Brumley.

Where were you born, and how long have you lived in Nashville?
I was born in Boulder, Colorado in the middle of a blizzard! I lived in Louisiana for a few years when I was younger, which is where all of my family is from, and grew up in Marietta, Georgia. I have only lived in Nashville for the last two and a half years.

How long have you worked at City Winery? What is your role?
I have worked at City Winery since the Nashville location opened in October 2014. I started out as a Venue Host, quickly moved up to Concierge, then to Office Manager and now Business Manager!

We found out you’re pretty famous on Pinterest! Tell us more.
Well, I don’t really have a good explanation. All of a sudden, over the course of a few months, I gained 40,000 followers! Pretty crazy. Click here to see Lauren Brumley’s Pinterest page.

You’re also a talented songwriter and musician. Tell us more about your history with the music industry.
I’ve been writing songs since I was fourteen. Since living in Nashville, I’ve played in a folk-pop duo. We played a bunch of different venues around Nashville, including all the rooms in City Winry Nashville! I’m now pursuing a solo venture and have an EP coming out later this year. Our blog series, “City Winery Nashville All Stars,” is meant to share the hidden talents and unique qualities of our entire staff. Enjoy another peek inside our location’s employees’ lives outside the workplace.

This week’s City Winery Nashville’s All Star is Wine Maker Bill Anton.

Where were you born, and how long have you lived in Nashville?
Born in Bay Shore, New York. Two years in Nashville.

How long have you worked at City Winery? What is your role?
Since 2009. Started as the Assistant Wine Maker in New York and Chicago, before taking the wine-making position here in Nashville.

Have you always been interested in wine-making? Why? If not, what else interests you?
To some degree, yes. I have always enjoyed wine and became intrigued by the wine-making process after completing culinary school. My other interests include endurance sports, such as cycling and triathlons. I completed Ironman Chattanooga 70.3 in May of 2016 and Ironman Racine 70.3 in July of 2014. I am signed up to do Ironman Boulder 70.3 this coming August.

You’re also a talented thoroughbred jockey. Tell us more!
Yes, I was a thoroughbred jockey for sixteen years. I had the opportunity to ride with some of the most talented jockeys in the industry, as well as riding at amazing racetracks all over the United States and UK. My son William is currently one of the top ten jockeys at Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco. He’s a much better rider than I ever was. :)
